Abstract
Objectives.The purpose of this study was to examine the economic old countermeasure for dentists and their requirements for social support, and to provide reference materials for exploring possible routes to develop their economic old countermeasure and set a favorable direction of social support for them.
Methods.To achieve the above goals, we adopted a stratified sampling method in proportion to the number of local practicing institutions. A total of 485, dental hospitals or clinics were selected in Seoul metropolitan area, 120 in Incheon city and 250 in Gyeonggi province were stratified for random sampling. A self-administered questionnaire was adapted to survey practicing dentists by mail, fax or interview. Between Feb. 22 and Apr. 22, 2010, 484 valid questionnaires (56.7%) were collected from respondents for data analysis. This study used SPSS (ver. 12.0) to analyze survey data, calculating results (frequencies, percentages)-using Chi-square tests, one-way ANOVA, independent t-tests and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
Results. A total of 76.5% of respondents answered ’Yes’ to a question regarding ’making economic old countermeasure’, 23.5% answered ’No’ to this question. Regarding a question about viable ways to make economic old countermeasure, most respondents, whether married or unmarried, were likely to rely on a ’private insurance plan.’ In cases of policy relating to the economic old countermeasure of dentists initiated by the Korean Dental Association (KDA), it was found that the largest number (31.2%) of respondents preferred ’regular old countermeasure orientations’ to others. Notably, the ’owner group’ was in favor of establishing a dental pension system or a pension system in combination with medical, dental and oriental medicine pension plans rather than plans for ’salaried dentists and supervisor group’. most respondents (57.6%) agreed that only a ’dentist’ is an appropriate beneficiary of the dental pension system.
Conclusions.It is now necessary for relevant authorities to develop and provide (1) a regular formulated orientation program on economic old countermeasures for dentists, and (2) a campaign to increase the active participation of dentists in the program.
